Alaska Cruise Excursion Recommendations
Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve by Motorcoach
This is a 19-mile scenic ride on a bus to a park where many types of wildlife can be viewed. There is a snack and a return trip to Haines.
Haines City and Cultural Tour
This is a bus tour around Haines, stopping to get off at several museums and other tourist attractions.
Traditional Salmon Bake
This is a barbeque with salmon, ribs and other dishes. I would not recommend this because of the abundance of food available on the ship. Also, during my cruise there two barbeques on board, a chicken-ribs one early in the cruise and a salmon one later in the cruise.
This is a walk in an area along the shore where much wildlife can be seen. It is lead by a knowledgeable tour guide. Some tours include a salmon barbeque.
This is a boat ride on Chilkoot Lake. I met people who took this tour and did another tour (kayaking) on Chilkoot Lake and saw these boats as they started (the lake is so big that I did not see these passengers at all during my kayak excursion). This is an excellent tour if you cannot participate in a physically active excursion, but want to get an authentic Alaskan nature experience. Note, if it is raining, you will be provided a raincoat because the boat is open. A description of Chilkoot Lake can be found on my page explaining my time in Haines.
Bald Eagle Preserve River Adventure
This is a 25-mile scenic bus ride followed by a ride in a jet boat in the Chilkat River, which is surrounded by steep mountains, and wildlife filled forests.
Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Float Trip
This is a half hour bus ride followed by a ride in a raft on the Chilkat River that is surrounded by steep mountains and wildlife filled forests.
This is a ride in an antique automobile (1930s to 1950s) around the Haines area.
Haines by Land and Sea
This is a ride in a relatively large boat around the scenic waters near Haines, followed by bus ride around the Haines area.
Chilkat Bicycle Adventure
This is a 6-mile guided bicycle tour around Haines and the surrounding area. It will probably involve some uphill peddling, since Haines is hilly, and mostly paved roads.
Chilkoot Lake/Glory Hole Mountain Biking
This is an 11-mile mountain biking ride through a dirt trail around the very scenic Chilkoot Lake. A description of Chilkoot Lake can be found on my page describing my time in Haines. This is advertised as a very difficult ride, but if you are fit, you will probably have a great work out and the time of your life. You will also see lots and lots of wildlife including lots of bald eagles.
I took this excursion and highly recommend it. This is a great trip that you can read about on my page describing my time in Haines. It begins with a 20-minute bus ride to Chilkoot Lake (or some other scenic waterway in the area). After instruction, you will get into 3 man sea kayaks. You will paddle around for several hours where the guides will show you wildlife and, if you ask them, tell you about living in Alaska ‘off the grid’. I saw lots of wildlife including bald eagles and otters. If your ship does not go to Haines, this tour may be worth taking from Skagway (will involve trips back and forth on the Fast-Ferry).
Chilkat Rain Forest Nature Hike
This is a very scenic hike (3 miles total) on a very scenic nature trail to a remote beach and returning with a knowledgeable guide. You will probably see lots of wildlife including bald eagles.
